Elkton Gas to Pass $117,493 Savings from Federal Tax Reform Law to Customers

ELKTON, Md. – April 12, 2018 – The Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved a reduction of Elkton Gas’ distribution rates totaling $117,493, effective April 1. The reduction stems from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which lowered Elkton Gas’ annual tax expense – a savings Elkton Gas’ 7,000 natural gas customers in Maryland will benefit from.

“Every customer deserves reliable energy at a price they can afford,” said Brian MacLean, president of Elkton Gas. “The benefits of the new tax law will lower costs for the company, which we are pleased to share with our customers.”

Elkton Gas filed the rate reduction with the PSC to recognize the benefits of the federal tax reform law, including the lowering of the federal corporate income tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent. All Elkton Gas customers will benefit from the $117,493 decrease; residential customers using 100 therms per month will see a bill decrease of $1.97.

Later this year, Elkton Gas will issue a one-time lump sum refund for residential customers’ usages during the period Jan. 1 through March 31, as directed by the PSC. The refund is to account for the time between when the federal tax reform law took effect, Jan. 1, and when the PSC-approved rate reduction became effective.
