Elkton Gas Reminds Customers to Dial 811 Before Digging

Elkton, MD, August 9, 2019 – August 11 marks the annual 811 Day, a date intended to remind homeowners and contractors of the importance of calling 811 before engaging in digging projects. By law, homeowners and contractors are required to dial 811 at least two full business days before digging – whether installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree, or laying a patio. No matter how big or small, diggers risk striking utility lines when they are unmarked, plus injury and interruption to service that can lead to costly repairs and fines.

When dialing 811, callers connect to Miss Utility, the state center that notifies the appropriate utility companies of the caller’s intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the proposed digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint. Each utility is marked by its designated color as noted in the chart below, with marks serving as a guide for safe digging.
